Our Story

Having the opportunity to spend 70 days in Europe together this past fall- early winter 2018 was one of the best experiences we have had thus far in our lives. There is definitely something to say about the freedom one enjoys to take time away from a regular schedule to spend time with the person they love in some of the most romantic and historical places in the world. Now that this experience has become our reality, YOU get to learn tons of wisdom to make a trip like this a reality for you, too!

Experience Over Material blog as an educational blueprint for those of you who have the urge to follow in our footsteps. To take a break from your regular day-to-day life and fulfill your dreams in traveling to places you expected to only imagine. It is so easy to get trapped in the rat race wherever you are from and miss out on what this beautiful world has to offer. Sometimes you just need to take a chance, do something crazy and let your life fall into place when you return home. A quote that really hit home with, that we came across while reading Tim Ferriss’s book, A Tools of Titans, was an excerpt from Rolf Potts book, Vagabonding, which states: “To actualize this power, we merely need to make strategic use (if only for a few weeks or months) of a time-honored personal freedom technique popularly known as quitting. And, despite its pejorative implication, quitting need not be as reckless as it sounds.” I invite you to follow along with our journey and realize that your friends, family, pets etc. are there to support you as you take the trip that everyone “wishes they could”.

John Luke

Morgan and I got married in September 2017. We honeymooned in Spain for two weeks which was both of our first times in Europe. Morgan has always been an avid world traveler, she has studied abroad in Costa Rica, done mission work in Honduras, traveled with family in Chile, trekked Patagonia. Her love for the Spanish culture on top of speaking the language led us to the Iberian Peninsula. I didn’t know what to expect for the trip having never traveled outside of the United States. For me, the trip opened my eyes to how other people live, different cultures, languages, modes of transportation, foods, clothes, and on and on. Following this trip, I had the urge to see more of the world and push myself to broaden how I think and ultimately how I live day to day.

I have grown up playing golf. I spent many weeks and summers traveling with my dad, team, and friends to play in amateur golf tournaments across the US. I played golf at the University of Memphis which kept me from studying abroad as I constantly had a full schedule at home. After graduating with an Accounting degree, I immediately started working at a local investment bank, specifically in the capital markets. Long hours, a few days off, and many stressful days later I finally began to learn self- awareness. I hated that I spent every day sitting in front of a computer screen trying to cold call people that didn’t want to talk to me to sell them something not because I thought it was right but because I would get chewed out if I didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, some of the experiences at this job were great. I loved traveling and meeting new clients and developing new relationships over my three years in the business. I made new friends of different ages and backgrounds but I realized I enjoyed the personal aspect much more than the business portion. It was hard to give up the status and the money but ultimately, I wasn’t happy.

I do not settle for ordinary. Or rather, I do not know what “ordinary” even is. I find myself chasing after the “butterflies” as I like to call them. That feeling you get in the pit of your stomach that tells you to GO FOR IT. To jump into the unknown, no matter how scared you feel. I worked for almost two years at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a local cancer research hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. This job taught me so much about empathy, patience, perspective, and the swiftness of life. As time went on, the job became very draining. I knew I wanted to start my own path, but no time ever seemed like the “right time”. The fear gremlins always seemed too loud. But with John Luke’s support, I dove headfirst into my journey creating Chica Confident. It is now a thriving blogger coaching + consulting business. Traveling allows me to find peace, reboot and increase my reach on those who I can help! I am thrilled this blog exists. I know it will be totally inspiring, enlightening and applicable for all those who want to jump into their dreams headfirst. Go see the world, see how people live outside of your bubble. Are you ready to take the leap?

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, even to the age." Matthew 28:19
